Welcome to Auckland
There is so much to see and do in New Zealand's largest city, so make sure you get out and about in your downtime and experience all that Auckland has to offer.
Auckland sits between two harbours, surrounded by dozens of dormant volcanoes, rainforest and numerous islands in the Hauraki Gulf. It is a unique playground suitable for all ages.
No visit to Auckland is complete without a visit up the Sky Tower. You can admire the volcanic landscape, city sights and sparkling Waitemata Harbour from the inside of the Tower. If that's a bit too sedate for you, take a walk with SkyWalk around the perimeter of the Tower 192 metres above the ground. You can even bungy jump off with SkyJump!
Another iconic feature in Auckland's skyline is Rangitoto Island, Auckland's youngest and most distinctive volcano. Hiking, lava caves, volcanic terrain and fascinating history can all be found in a day trip, as well as spectacular 360 degree views from the summit.
Take a ferry across to Waiheke Island, where you will find white sand beaches, wineries, olive groves and restaurants - the perfect place to spend a summer's day. Hire a scooter and explore the whole island.
Drive along the picturesque waterfront to Mission Bay, a vibrant beachfront strip that has an extensive range of dining options and is a hugely popular destination all year round. Mission Bay is also where the ISA Opening Ceremony will be held on the 20th of January 2010.
Check out the world's largest collection of Maori and Pacific treasures at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, situated in the beautiful grounds of the Auckland Domain. Or take an interactive guided walk with Tamaki Hikoi around Maungawhau (Mt Eden) and learn all about Maori culture and history from a guide from the local Ngati Whatua tribe.
If you're looking for somewhere to boost those energy levels, you'll be spoilt for choice in Auckland. You can fill up at super-casual food courts where you will find food from Asia and around the world at low prices, or head along to one of the many restaurants and pubs in the Viaduct or splash out on a fine-dining experience.
This is just a small taste of what Auckland has to offer. If you would like more information, suggestions, or would like to book an activity, visit www.aucklandnz.com or call 0800 AUCKLAND.
Piha Beach
Just over half an hour from downtown Auckland is Piha Beach - an idyllic l coastal village with one of the best surf breaks in Australasia.
The unique black iron sand beach has a reputation for consistently awesome waves and the surrounding tropical rainforest makes the area a must see for hikers, and indeed anyone who wants to experience unspoiled, clean, green New Zealand at its best.
Piha was the birthplace of board riding in New Zealand. The sport was introduced by two Californian Lifeguards back in 1956. Piha has hosted many national and international events over the years, the most recent being the hugely successful Vodafone Surf Sessions.
However, a word of warning: Piha and neighbouring beaches are also known for strong and unpredictable currents. Lifeguards are on duty during summer months and swimmers are advised to stay between the red and yellow flags during patrol hours.
Iconic to the beach is Lion Rock, a natural eroded volcanic neck formation which acts as a natural division for the two main parts of the beach (North and South Piha). Lion Rock is so-called because from side on it resembles a large male lion. A trail leads to the top of the lions head and affords amazing views of the beach which is fringed by the Tasman Sea on one side and native bush on the other.
The drive to Piha Beach is through the beautiful, protected, rain forest of the Waitakere Ranges, from which this City takes its name. The road is fully sealed but is windy, so travel slowly.
Close to the beach are a number of easy walking trails, including the Kitekite Falls, which while not very large, are picturesque and swimming is possible through all seasons in a pool just above the falls. At the bottom of the falls is a sheltered picnic area which is popular in the summer time.
So while you are enjoying the Quicksilver World Junior Champs please also take the opportunity to relax and enjoy Piha - the very best of what New Zealand has to offer.
