Piha Beach

Just over half an hour from downtown Auckland is Piha Beach - an idyllic coastal village with one of the best surf breaks in Australasia.
The unique black iron sand beach has a reputation for consistently awesome waves and the surrounding tropical rainforest makes the area a must see for hikers, and indeed anyone who wants to experience unspoiled, clean, green New Zealand at its best.

Piha was the birthplace of board riding in New Zealand. The sport was introduced by two Californian Lifeguards back in 1956. Piha has hosted many national and international events over the years, the most recent being the hugely successful Vodafone Surf Sessions.
However, a word of warning : Piha and its neighbouring beaches are also known for strong and unpredictable currents. Lifeguards are on duty during summer months and swimmers are advised to stay between the red and yellow flags during patrol hours.

Iconic to the beach is Lion Rock, a natural eroded volcanic neck formation which acts as a natural division for the two main parts of the beach (North and South Piha). Lion Rock is so-called because from side on it resembles a large male lion. A trail leads to the top of the lions head and affords amazing views of the beach which is fringed by the Tasman Sea on one side and native bush on the other.
The drive to Piha Beach is through the beautiful, protected, rain forest of the Waitakere Ranges, from which this City takes its name. The road is fully sealed but is windy, so travel slowly.

Close to the beach are a number of easy walking trails, including the Kitekite Falls, which while not very large, are picturesque and swimming is possible through all seasons in a pool just above the falls. At the bottom of the falls is a sheltered picnic area which is popular in the summer time.
So while you are enjoying the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships please also take the opportunity to relax and enjoy Piha - the very best of what New Zealand has to offer.
